Tri-Con Materials has a rich history in the aggregate materials industry. The company was initially established in 1968 as Walnut Sand and Gravel by Richard 'Dick' Nelson and his brother Ronald Nelson. They operated gravel pits in Walnut, Hennepin, and Henry, providing top-quality washed aggregates for various applications such as asphalt, concrete, and base materials.

In 1992, Richard formed Tri-Con Materials with partners Steve Nelson and Steve Harmon, operating in three Illinois counties. In 1997, Tri-Con Materials merged with the historic entity Walnut Sand and Gravel, solidifying Tri-Con as the operating entity. Today, their operations are based at their Hennepin location, which is their largest active gravel pit situated along the Illinois River.
